10 Tips for a Successful Party
BY SUSAN KAIWI, OWNER, ETIQUETTE SCHOOL OF AUSTIN
It takes a collaborative effort to have a successful party. From planning and preparation to the conclusion of the event, if everyone gives proper attention to detail, the event will be successful and those involved will look forward to the next occasion. Following are some tips to remind hosts and guests of the importance of following party protocol:
Tip #1
When choosing invitations, consult with a stationery boutique or fine department store regarding design, wording and other details. This will ensure that you are sending the most stylish, appropriate invitation possible.
Tip #2
The tone or theme of the party should be reflected in your invitation, as the invitation is the first touch you have with your invited guests. Therefore, make sure the invitation reflects the spirit of the party, whether formal or informal.
Tip #3
It is a nice gesture for the hostess to include a note on the invitation about proper attire for the event. This will also prevent additional telephone calls dealing with the issue. If, as a guest, you are uncertain about attire, by all means call and ask so you will not feel embarrassed later.
Tip #4
The R.S.V.P. is the most essential duty of an invited guest, yet the most often ignored. This is your response to the invitation so that the host knows how to plan for the party. If the host does not know how many people to expect, it is impossible to plan the proper amount of food, beverages, or place settings, thus creating a terrible dilemma for the host. Proper etiquette dictates that guests respond in a timely fashion to the R.S.V.P.— within the week, and certainly before the date stated with the R.S.V.P. request.
Tip #5
As a guest, be on time for the party. Arriving within 15 minutes of the stated time is acceptable, but no later. If you are the guest of honor, call the host if you are running late. If it is a dinner party, the host may begin without you and you must join in on the course in progress once you arrive.
Tip #6
While attending the event never drink excessively, especially when in the company of career colleagues, as your behavior is being scrutinized and could cost you a promotion.
Tip #7
Your host will be forever indebted to you if you will circulate around the party and introduce yourself to the other guests. If the party is a “slow starter,” do whatever you can to bring energy to the group and encourage others to mingle and get acquainted.
Tip #8
Always greet your host upon arrival and departure from the event, giving proper praise about the party, and saying how much you enjoyed it.
Tip #9
Never be the last to leave the party. At a dinner party, guests must stay at least an hour following the meal before it is acceptable to leave the event.
Tip #10
Write a thank-you note to your host saying how much you enjoyed the event, how lovely everything was, and how nice it was to see everyone.
